According to the Wall Street Journal – under the NEW Credit Card Act ,credit issurers would consider only a borrower's "independent" income rather than household income.  Various companies are asking the Federal Reserve to drop this rule. The intent was to stop "sleazy" practices from some financial institutions.

  • hard to believe a step backward for women. that's what it was like in the early 70;s. I had credit in my own name but once married, when I wanted to change my name, the clerks snatched the card like I was a thief and said, my husband would have to fill out an application and allow me to use the card.
the card would read Mrs. "his name". my name was lost. Later when I applied for a car loan, yes, I was employed and yes the bank ran a credit check on me, the bank officer called my husband to co-sign.
The bank said I didn't have enough income to cover  'our' mortgage and the new loan.  So all our married debt was counted against me but not household income. Gotta love it!!! Yes, I was outraged and yes I screamed until the papers were redone on the loan and the car was in my name, no co-sign.
and yes, I can say that after 30 years I am still outraged.  BTW, spouses are resonsible for the others debt until a court separates it as in a divorce decree.

  • We thought “we had come a long way Baby”. When I moved to Florida in 1983 believe it or not my library card had to be in my husband’s name.
